TODAY’S SCRIPTURE REFERENCE: Luke 4:31-27
*Jesus Casts Out a Demon*
*31 *Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and taught there
in the synagogue every Sabbath day. *32 *There, too, the people were
amazed at his teaching, for he spoke with authority.
*33 *Once when he was in the synagogue, a man possessed by a
*]* spirit—began shouting at Jesus, *34 *“Go away! Why are you
interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I
know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
*35 *Jesus cut him short. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he
ordered. At that, the demon threw the man to the floor as the crowd
watched; then it came out of him without hurting him further.
*36 *Amazed, the people exclaimed, “What authority and power this
man’s words possess! Even evil spirits obey him, and they flee at
his command!”*37 *The news about Jesus spread through every village
in the entire region.
Notice what the people, who were amazed, say: “What authority and
power this man’s /words/ possess! Not the power this /man/
possesses, but his /words/.
We understand that because of who Jesus is, His words would have been
powerful in that, and any, context. Words carry the authority of the
one backing the words. In other words, if a child went to his younger
brother and said “you need to clean your room” it is likely that
the instruction would be ignored. But adding the simple words “/Dad
says/ you need to clean your room” brings great power to those
When you speak, in whose authority do you do so? Do you speak in your
own, earthly authority, or do you speak words that are backed by the
power of the Holy Spirit? When we pray in His name, or preach in His
name, or share the gospel in His name, or even cast out demons in His
name, we are not limited by our own ability and knowledge. Rather, our
words carry the weight of Almighty God.
A CALL TO ACTION
Shift the focus of your words. When you pray, preach, evangelize or
anything else that is done for the glory of God, remember to do it in
the name of the one who has sent you – Jesus Christ. Things that are
accomplished are not done so in our own power, but in the power of God
A PRAYER TO PRAY
Thank you God that your power is available to me. Please help me to
speak in Your power rather than my own. Amen.
