1 Thessalonians 5:12-28

Paul Encourages the Thessalonians

12 Brothers and sisters, we ask you to show your appreciation for those leaders who work among you and instruct you. 13 We ask you to love them and think very highly of them because of the work they are doing. Live in peace with each other.

14 We encourage you, brothers and sisters, to instruct those who are not living right, cheer up those who are discouraged, help the weak, and be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that no one ever pays back one wrong with another wrong. Instead, always try to do what is good for each other and everyone else.

16 Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying. 18 Whatever happens, give thanks, because it is God’s will in Christ Jesus that you do this.

19 Don’t put out the Spirit’s fire. 20 Don’t despise what God has revealed. 21 Instead, test everything. Hold on to what is good. 22 Keep away from every kind of evil.

23 May the God who gives peace make you holy in every way. May he keep your whole being—spirit, soul, and body—blameless when our Lord Jesus Christ comes. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this.

25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us.

26 Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss.

27 In the Lord’s name, I order you to read this letter to all the brothers and sisters.

28 The good will[a] of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

The title, “Paul encourages the Thessalonians” is so appropriate. Reaching the end of his letter, the tone of Paul’s letter seems to change slightly as he becomes even more caring and concerning. There are a few main thoughts and ideas that Paul encourages them with – and therefore, may you be encouraged today as well!

1. Appreciate your pastors and leaders, and be at peace with them

Ministry, whether it be pastoring or administering or missional, is a tough calling. Those in ministry not only deal with many people’s struggles and opinions, but also a greater attack from the enemy. Take time out to appreciate those who have spiritual oversight over you.

2. Be attentive to the needs of those around you.

Help your fellow Christians to live the best life they can. Keep them accountable. Make it hard for them to sin, easy for them to be filled with the joy of the spirit of God.

3. Pray!

Always be in communion with God Your father. Also come to Him with a greatful spirit, and let your prayers be filled with thanksgiving and joy.

4. Be open to the work of the Holy Spirit in your life.

He may choose to work in your life at “obvious” time (during a church service, in your quiet time etc) but He may choose to reveal the deep truths of life to you while you’re standing in a shopping queue, driving to work or washing the dishes. Always be open to what God has to say to you! When He speaks, test it.

Lord today I give you praise and adoration. You are a great, loving God who chooses to lavish me with love. Thank you for all that you have blessed me with. Today, I thank you for the spiritual leaders who have been part of my spiritual journey and ask that you would encourage them as they minister to your people today. I ask too that You would speak to me today. Help me to hear your whisper in my spirit. In Jesus name, Amen.
