Luke 8

New Living Translation (NLT)

Parable of the Lamp

16 “No one lights a lamp and then covers it with a bowl or hides it
under a bed. A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light can be seen
by all who enter the house. 17 For all that is secret will eventually
be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be
brought to light and made known to all.

18 “So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my
teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not
listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away
from them.”

Jesus has already referred to us Christians as a “city on a hill”,
as the “light of the world”, as the “salt of the earth”. He
wants our witness to be effective, for us to be a visible presence in
a dark world. But here, in Luke 8, he links our ‘light’ with our
ability to hear from Him, and this, just after speaking about the
different kind of soil His word is sown into.

He says “pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my
teaching, more understanding will be given”.

Here’s a test for a Monday morning: What did your pastor preach
about yesterday? What were some of the scriptures he referred to or
preached from? What were some of the practical things he encouraged
you to do as a result of the Word of God preached to you?

Even less than 24 hours later, many of us will struggle to answer that
question. Yet, God has instructed us to pay attention to how we hear.
It is that art of listening to God’s Word that produces fruit in our
lives, because if we hear it and forget it, it is useless.

This week, find a way that will help /you/ remember God’s word.
Sticky notes in your car; a scripture art pic on your phone/computer
background so you can read scripture every time you look at the
screen; a scripture attached to your water bottle; Calendar reminders
that bring up a scripture etc. These are practical ways to help you
have scripture imprinted on your heart and in your mind. What will you

Jesus thank you for Your Word which is a live and able to transform my
mind. Please help me to focus on remembering what you say through your
word to me this week. Amen.
