Luke 9

New Living Translation (NLT)

Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy

37 The next day, after they had come down the mountain, a large crowd
met Jesus. 38 A man in the crowd called out to him, “Teacher, I beg
you to look at my son, my only child. 39 An evil spirit keeps seizing
him, making him scream. It throws him into convulsions so that he
foams at the mouth. It batters him and hardly ever leaves him alone.
40 I begged your disciples to cast out the spirit, but they couldn’t
do it.”

41 Jesus said, “You faithless and corrupt people! How long must I be
with you and put up with you?” Then he said to the man, “Bring
your son here.”

42 As the boy came forward, the demon knocked him to the ground and
threw him into a violent convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil
spirit and healed the boy. Then he gave him back to his father. 43 Awe
gripped the people as they saw this majestic display of God’s power.

Here’s what Jesus was really saying: “Guys, seriously?! Do I have
to do everything myself?”.

Jesus had been with the disciples now for some time, and had spent
most of His time teaching them, equipping them, getting them ready for
ministry situations and equipping them to deal with the various
situations life threw at them. So, it must have been an incredibly
frustrating moment when He hears that they were not able to do the
things He had taught them to do. You know, simple things, like driving
out demons.

This story carries on a little later in Luke, so we’ll come back to
the disciples response. But this passage calls us to evaluate our own
abilities to put into action the things we have been taught through
the Word of God. Do God’s instructions on how to do life change the
way you life? Do you apply His principles? Do you think like He wants
you to think? Speak like He wants you to speak? Act like He wants you
to act? If not, I suspect you will get the same response.
“Seriously? You still don’t get it?”.

It is only when we take Jesus’ instructions and apply them to life
that we can expect to have a life that bears fruit, a life where we
see the results of being empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Today, and for a few days to come, evaluate your thoughts, words and
actions, as well as your response to the situations life throw at you,
against the backdrop of God’s Word and see how well you are doing at
putting His Word into action. You may be positively surprised. But
more likely, you’ll be inspired to work a little harder at living
the kind of life He has taught us to live.

Thank you Lord that you have given us instructions for the best way to
do life. Please would you help me to always be consciously aware of
the way I’m living life, and to align my thoughts, words and actions
with Your instructions. Amen
