*Luke 6*

New Living Translation (NLT)

*The Beatitudes*

*20 *Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said,

“God blesses you who are poor,

for the Kingdom of God is yours.

*21 *

God blesses you who are hungry now,

for you will be satisfied.

God blesses you who weep now,

for in due time you will laugh.

*22 *What blessings await you when people hate you and exclude you and
mock you and curse you as evil because you follow the Son of Man.*23
*When that happens, be happy! Yes, leap for joy! For a great reward
awaits you in heaven. And remember, their ancestors treated the
ancient prophets that same way.

Even, actually, especially in Jesus’ time, people were ridiculed,
judged, cursed, mocked, excluded for being followers of Jesus. Not
much has changed. Still today we sometimes find outselves on the
receiving end of less than favourable treatment because we are
Christians. Usually, that has to do with the world’s perception of
Christians – that we are boring, judgmental, and can’t have fun.
Other times, people are so anti Jesus that they are anti His people.

Jesus isn’t clueless about this – He speaks into this kind of
rejection by teaching His disciples that He looks after those who are
victims of injustice. Those who are poor, hungry, heart broken and
rejected all have His attention and are blessed.

He goes so far as to encourage us to be joyful when we are rejected
because of Him, because a great reward awaits us in eternity.

If you find yourself rejected because of Christ, try take His Word to
heart and know that He sees your rejection and will bless you. On the
other hand, if you face no rejection or criticism whatsoever – maybe
you need to ask yourself why? If it is because you have surrounded
yourself with only Christians, that isn’t a great solution. To be
able to share the light of Jesus, we need to go where there’s only
darkness – to people who need Him, but are rejecting Him.

Lord thank you that in times when I am criticized or rejected because
I follow you, you are watching and have promised to bless me. Help me
in those times to remain faithful to you and not get too disappointed
by the people rejecting me. Amen.
