1 Samuel 3
New Living Translation (NLT)

Samuel Speaks for the Lord
15 Samuel stayed in bed until morning, then got up and opened the
doors of the Tabernacle[c

] as usual. He was afraid to tell Eli what the Lord had said to him.
16 But Eli called out to him, “Samuel, my son.”

“Here I am,” Samuel replied.

17 “What did the Lord say to you? Tell me everything. And may God
strike you and even kill you if you hide anything from me!” 18 So
Samuel told Eli everything; he didn’t hold anything back. “It is
the Lord’s will,” Eli replied. “Let him do what he thinks

19 As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him, and everything Samuel
said proved to be reliable. 20 And all Israel, from Dan in the north
to Beersheba in the south, knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet
of the Lord. 21 The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh and gave
messages to Samuel there at the Tabernacle.

How many of us could honestly say that we would have told Eli the
truth? God had given Samuel a very, very difficult word to give to Eli
– his priest and spiritual authority. Yet, regardless of how tough it
was, Samuel obeyed and “told Eli everything; he didn’t hold anything

John 8:32 reminds us that as we know the truth, the truth will set us

Far too few have the guts today to be honest. Every year when the
Idols shows start I’m amazed at people who audition, thinking they can
sing. The reality is if someone had just been honest with them, they
wouldn’t have auditioned, wouldn’t put themselves in front of a panel
who had to tell them the truth, often far too harshly.

Have we become cowards? Have you become a coward? Or do you speak the
truth, however hard it may seem.

Like so many of the challenges I share with you each day, this is one
that will take some time to master. But here it is: Start telling the
truth. Always. Even when people don’t want to hear it. Be sensible, be
sensitive, share the truth in love, but share the truth. If people
don’t hear the truth, it cannot and will not set them free.

God thank you that you are the God of truth. Please help me to find
the courage when necessary to speak truth, even when it is difficult
for me. Help me to speak it in love, in a way that encourages rather
than breaks down. Amen.
