Rebuilding communication for a growing church
The challenge
A Johannesburg church had a growing ministry, multiple teams and an increasing volume of communication, but many of the systems behind the scenes had developed independently over time. Information lived in different places, communication was often reactive, and there was an opportunity to create clearer rhythms across worship, media, communications and ministry planning.
The approach
Rather than simply producing more content, I focused on the systems behind it. I looked at how information moved from ministry leaders, through staff and creative teams, and eventually to the congregation. The goal was to make communication clearer, reduce unnecessary duplication and build repeatable systems and rhythms that would serve both staff and volunteers.
The work
I helped centralise church communications and introduced clearer planning and content workflows across the ministry. This included developing a Plan → Prepare → Preach → Publish content process, improving Sunday media and presentation workflows, strengthening social and digital communication, migrating key congregation engagement into Church Center, and developing systems for tracking ministry goals and KPIs.
Alongside the technical work, I built rhythms for worship-team development, volunteer recruitment and training, songwriting, staff communication and content production - creating systems designed to keep working beyond one person.
What changed
The church moved toward a more coordinated approach to ministry communication and content, with clearer ownership, better visibility of upcoming work and more intentional use of digital platforms. New systems made it easier to plan ahead, equip volunteers and connect Sunday ministry with what happened during the rest of the week.
One tangible example was a focused volunteer recruitment campaign that generated 78 new volunteer sign-ups.
The introduction of a hybrid model of Sunday announcements, consisting of a life, in-person anchor welcoming the congregation; and video announcements sharing the information, also streamlined the communication within the services.
“It's so good to know what's going on in the church now!”
